Storytelling, and even more particularly cooperative storytelling, has a many different types of places where people can interact. N'Fwiki defines four different types of places based on how they interact with various stories.

Locales are individual settings. Locales are defined by specific scenes; that is a locale is the setting for a scene. A scene may take place in a specific room, or cover an area as wide as a street or river. A scene may even take place in a way that covers a whole city.

Regions are areas grouped together for whatever reason an author desires. An author might define the house a family lives in as a region, but more typically regions are larger areas defined by geography, climate, or politics.

Realms or Worlds are broad areas where certain specific rules, in terms of physics, metaphysics, and storyline hold true. A Realm can belong to several Metaverses.

Metaverses are Realms connected by a particular theme. While the rules may be different in every Realm, certain elements remain constant, and those determine the Metaverse. GURPS Web Worlds is a Metaverse connected by a shared game system (GURPS).
